Snapchat Memories dated today, with no location: why, and the fix
When you export your Memories from Snapchat, the files lose their original date and location. Your photo library then puts them all on the day of the download.
Why it happens
- Date: the files carry no capture date, only the date they were downloaded.
- Location: the GPS positions sit in a separate file of the export (memories_history.json), not in the photos.
- Text and stickers: they come as separate image files, next to each photo.
- Long videos: they are cut into pieces of about ten seconds.
What you see
- In Google Photos and on the iPhone, years of Memories appear on a single day.
- They don't show on the map of your photo library ("Places" on iPhone).
- Your captions are missing from the photos.
The free fix
Memories Map, free software for Windows, reads the export and writes the original date and GPS position into each photo and video. It also burns in your captions and stickers, joins split videos, and builds a map of all your Memories. Everything stays on your computer.
- Request your export in the Snapchat app and download all the ZIP files.
- Download Memories Map, choose the folder with the ZIP files, then click "Find my memories".
- Import the result into Google Photos or your iPhone. Copy the files as they are (iCloud for Windows, a cable or Google Photos' upload): messaging apps remove the location.
